Everything you ever wanted to know about E-Commerce
When you first start an online business, two of the confusing terms you'll run across are "merchant account" and "payment gateway". And for the online merchant, the distinction is important. There's no "best" solution when it comes to setting up your payment processing capabilities. Each business will have different needs.
In our continuing effort to help our clients decide what's right for them, we found a fantastic article for you that explains all you need to know to get started processing payments with your online business. Solving the Payment Processing Problem by John Conde compares the costs of three popular payment gateways with the cost of a true merchant account.
John Conde also offers a handy online calculator to assist in the process. HERE is the Merchant Cost Calculator.
PayPal
Of the third party processors available. their rates are the lowest, therefore we recommend them for new businesses that don't expect a high volume of trade initially.
Originally there was a catch, in that buyers needed to have paypal accounts in order to use the service, but this is no longer the case, and we've been pleased with the way PayPal has been working for us and for several of our clients.
We recommend this option for those just starting out, and for those website owners who have only a few products. It is possible to sell services through PayPal and set up recurring billing. You can use it to send one-time bills as well. And there is no set-up fee.
